Captain Francisco Martinez is an unsung hero virtually absent from Texas History books. He was, though, one of the first explorers into Texas as second in command to the later Alonso de Leon expeditions to locate the French intruder La Salle. Martinez had served in Spain during wars with France and was fluent in the language. He thus was also the French interpreter for the expeditions. He wrote a chronicle of a side trip he took to the Texas Coast and later was placed as second in command at Pensacola when the French came looking for the mouth of the Mississippi River.
