Description

We are pleased to present this first volume of deaths and burials for San Agustin Church in Laredo. We were fortunate that Lee James Nichols lent his skills and talents to transcribe copies of church documents written in the old Spanish paleography script. These copies were obtained form the San Antonio Public Library, the repository of the files of the late master genealogist Gloria Villa Cadena. Documents are available through 1876 except that a section of documents are missing form 1836-1863. The available documents will allow us to complete two more volumes. The sacramental records from 1760 to 1788 are missing and Reverend Robert E. Wright OMI calls these  ” The Silent Years.” Lost were two marriage books, two baptisms books, and two death and burial books. They went missing sometime during the 19th century, and perhaps some day they may appear in a musty archive. This work fills an information  gap because it gives us a window of names of Laredo residents who lived during that period and are now known through their inclusion in this work. Unfortunately some of the records were not legible or water damaged but the majority of the entries were legible. The first entry was the death of Maria Encarnacion, infant daughter of Cirildo Trevino and Ana Maria Ramos. The last entry was an adult surnamed Benavides but his first name was illegible. Over a 1,000 entries with an index. Introduction by George Farias.
