Description

In the 1920s, Mexico suffered cruel oppression under the ruthless anticlerical government of Plutarco Elias Calles.¬† United Sates President Woodrow Wilson indirectly aided and abetted many atrocities. The Mexican government began a persecution of the Catholic Church that led to an uprising of the ordinary people called the Cristero War for the battle cry of the people, “Viva Cristo¬† Rey.” Many priest and young catholic laymen, in addition to innocent civilians were martyred. This was called ” The Silent War,” as Mexico tried to suppress it initially from their history books. The US ultimately helped broker a peace.
