Born in Spain, Miera y Pacheco (1713-1785) is best known for executing the first maps of New Mexico, but was an artist of religious subjects, a distinguished soldier,a captain of the Royal Corps of Engineers, and a painter, sculptor, town mayor and intrepid explorer of the vast colony of New Spain.
